Customizing a synthetic route to success
Our client, a prominent US multinational corporation, was encountering a significant obstacle in the implementation of a new development process.
The Challenge
Low yields in their electrochemical fluorination (ECF) process – which were being caused by the formation of a mixture containing both fully and partially fluorinated compounds – were making it difficult to isolate the pure intermediate they required for this new process.
The Solution
In collaboration with our custom synthesis partner, the Exim-Indis team was able to fine-tune several critical parameters including electrode potential, current density, reaction time, temperature, and the choice of electrolyte to enable closer control of fluorination. By reducing the mixture of partially fluorinated compounds, our careful adjustment significantly improved yields, while the introduction of multiple distillation steps enhanced the purification level of the intermediate.
This backward integration also proved to be highly cost-effective, enabling us to synthesize and supply the required quantity to the customer efficiently.
